BOOK CLUB!

After the summer hiatus, Integrated Schools’ Book Club is back! Join parents across the country on September 25, 2018 to discuss two articles and a video (all available free online; two times available)…  This session is great for parents who are new to thinking about school integration as well as parents who’ve been in these discussions for awhile…

HOW Book Club WORKS:

  • REGISTER
  • Read (and watch)
  • Join the discussion via your computer or phone
  • Share on social media!

While summer has been relatively quiet over email, the Integrated Schools team has been hard at work.  This autumn, be on the lookout for…

  • our new Parent-to-Parent program that matches parents who are thinking about enrolling their kids in an integrating school with parents who have ‘been there.’
  • the launch of our Conversations podcast series (have a story to share or a topic you want to address? let us know!)
  • building supports for our Local Chapters Leaders (interested in starting a chapter in your community? email hello@integratedschools.org)
  • the renewal of our yearly Two Tour Pledge campaign to encourage parents to simply step in the building of a school that serves mostly global-majority students
  • resources for parents engaging in TheSchoolConversation in their communities
  • our Book Club meetings for this school year
  • and more (some are kind of secret still, so… we’ll tell you later)!

In doing this planning, preparing, and projecting, we’ve had a few more conversations about why we chose the name ‘Integrated Schools’.  It’s not a fancy name, it doesn’t always feel comfortable, but we return to again and again to this: when we are not talking about integration, we are not doing integration.

DC Parents — We hope you can join us for Integrated Schools-DC’s next event!

When: Sunday, September 30th, 2pm-4:30pm.
Where: Watkins Elementary, 420 12th St SE, Washington, DC 20003
RSVP: Reply to this email or RSVP on Facebook

While many schools in DC are almost entirely segregated by race and class, there are some schools, often in gentrifying neighborhoods, with a more diverse population. But within these schools, segregation and inequities persist (and are often reinforced). Our next event will bring parents across the District together to share stories about what’s working (and not working) in building healthy, respectful, and equitable communities in gentrifying schools.

The event will feature psychologist and cultural competence expert Dr. Samantha Sweeney, a representative from Teaching for Change, and a panel of parents sharing their personal lessons learned. If you are grappling with how your school can build a more diverse PTO, or hold more inclusive social events, or just how to connect with other parents from different backgrounds, this is an event for you.

Snacks will be provided and childcare is available, email to let us know if you need it. Please RSVP by replying to this email or clicking “Going” on our Facebook event page.

(and remember to look for us on Facebook and Twitter!)
