We are beyond thrilled to announce that Robin Appleberry will serve as the new Executive Director of Integrated Schools. This is the start of an exciting new chapter for our organization and for every family in this movement.
Robin is a White parent of two teenagers enrolled in Title I, majority Black and Brown public schools in Washington, DC. As a child, she attended highly rated and highly segregated public schools, setting her on a lifelong journey to understand and untangle Whiteness, privilege, moral responsibility and human connection. Professionally, she comes to us from a career in public health policy, with service in all three branches of government. Robin trained as a lawyer and worked for over two decades on tobacco product regulation, health equity and environmental health. After attending an Integrated Schools DC chapter event in 2018, Robin knew that she had found her people. She became an avid podcast listener and regular participant in IS discussions, joining the DC chapter leadership team in 2021. In addition to her passion for and commitment to school integration, Robin brings to this role extensive experience in organizational management, strategic planning and stakeholder engagement.
Our Leadership Team and Board of Directors have had the chance to get to know and work closely with Robin in recent months and are confident that she will lead Integrated Schools with kindness, wisdom and integrity.
For over a decade, Integrated Schools has been powered almost entirely by volunteers, and for now that will continue to include Robin. We are proud of everything that so many individuals’ generosity has built. We also know that volunteer labor alone cannot sustain this work for the long haul, and the need for what we do grows every day. Robin will lead Integrated Schools toward one vital goal: to deepen and sustain our work for the years ahead. This growth is how we carry our founder Courtney Mykytyn’s vision forward.
What stays the same: The programs you know and love will continue. Book discussions, chapter events, our groundbreaking podcast, and the life-changing personal connections at the heart of this community are all here to stay. We are building more support and structure behind those programs, and we are planning for growth. In the months ahead, Robin will lead us in gathering stories and ideas from across our community and engaging with partners about what has mattered most and what is possible. We’ll want to hear from you, so look out for more on that very soon.
