by | Aug 19, 2024

We are thrilled to announce a special “teacher's edition” of the Integrated Schools Book Club, a conversation that centers educators but also makes room for those of us across the Integrated Schools community who want to know how we can support teachers in honoring and uplifting the diverse backgrounds of our students.

We are thrilled to announce a special “teacher’s edition” of the Integrated Schools Book Club, a conversation that centers educators but also makes room for those of us across the Integrated Schools community who want to know how we can support teachers in honoring and uplifting the diverse backgrounds of our students. The book is Dr. Gholdy Muhammad’s Unearthing Joy, a deep dive into the heart of culturally and historically responsive teaching practices. Dr. Muhammad, a prominent educator and thought leader, explores how we can create classrooms that celebrate identity, foster a sense of belonging, and inspire joy in learning.

The book has been called a must-read for anyone looking to implement more inclusive and effective teaching methods. Whether you’re looking to spark conversations among your peers, seeking strategies to address social issues with your students and children, or simply want to know how members of your school community can advocate for and support responsive and joyful teaching, we hope you’ll join us for one of this fall’s Book Club sessions – and invite the awesome teachers in your life to join you.

Two of the sessions (Sat 10/26 and Thurs 10/29) will be geared towards teacher participation and facilitated by educators, while the other two sessions (Tues 10/22 and Thurs 10/29) will be open to parents and caregivers and will discuss the book and how we may advocate for culturally and historically responsive teaching and learning in our schools. Please register for the session that suits your needs the best. Our goal is to follow up with all attendees sharing thoughts and resources after all the sessions!

Event Details:

10/22 Tuesday, 9am PT/ 12pm ET

10/24 Thursday, 5pm PT/8pm ET (Teacher’s Session)

10/26 Saturday, 8:30am PT/ 11:30am ET (Teacher’s Session)

10/29 Thursday,  7pm PT / 10pm ET

Who Should Attend?

While this book was written primarily for classroom teachers, we welcome participation from school leaders, administrators, school board members, and anyone who is eager to enhance their understanding of culturally responsive pedagogies. Parents and caregivers not in the field of education are absolutely welcome to attend, and for those who’d prefer, we’ll make available a layperson “readers’ guide” in September.) Whether you plan to attend or not, we hope you’ll take this opportunity to let the teachers in your life know you’re part of the Integrated Schools community, and encourage them to sign up for a Book Club session. You might even sweeten the deal by offering to purchase them a copy of Unearthing Joy!

What to Expect:

  • Seeking Inspiration in Community: Educators will have a chance to share how they relate the key themes of Unearthing Joy to their own current teaching practices and school environments.
  • Sharing Strategies: Teachers will be encouraged to share strategies they’ve implemented, as well any obstacles they’ve faced and “aha” moments they’ve experienced.
  • Ideas for Stepping Up: Parents/caregivers will come away with a better understanding about what it takes to foster inclusive and uplifting educational experiences for all students – and what we as members of the school community can do to advocate for and support teachers in unearthing joy.

How to Participate

Please register here for one of our four sessions to secure your spot. There is NO COST to participate; donations are welcome but not required.

This is a fantastic opportunity to learn from one another, share experiences, and help create a more inclusive educational environment. Let’s come together to transform our teaching practices and uplift the joy of learning!
