A new poll out by PDK (an ed org that has been conducting these polls x48 years) shows some very interesting things about what Americans think the main purpose of public education should be…

45% of respondents believe that the goal of school should be to prepare kids academically

25% of respondents believe that the goal should be to prepare students for work

25% of respondents believe that the goal should be to prepare kids to be good citizens.

Clearly, we are not of one mind about the purpose of public education… Have we lost our collective sense of mission or, instead, is this a comforting example of our variable interpretations?

Either way, what is most fascinating to me is that 25% of people believe in the mission of citizenship. Are these respondents the same people who have enrolled their kids in integrated schools??
