We at Integrated Schools feel profound sorrow for the families separated, the paths disrupted, and the lives lost in Minneapolis and across countless American communities. In this dark time when powerful people are doing their worst to divide us, we light each other’s way forward with an even more powerful truth: that the only way we win is together.
The extraordinary groundswell of ordinary Minnesotans coming out in bitter cold to bear witness, protect each other, and stand up for the principles we all hold dear has resonated across the country and around the world. It is a call to action. Here are some concrete steps each of us can take:
- Whatever their party or voting record, our elected leaders need to hear from us early and often: 5calls.org and the 5calls app are great tools.
- Public School Strong campaign: Tell Your Attorney General to Keep ICE out of Public Schools.
- Prepare to document and record ICE activity in your community—this Eyes on ICE training video from NoKings.org is a good starting point; you can also look for a Rapid Response Network in your area.
- Ask your school’s social worker, community assistant or administrator what impacted families need right now: groceries? volunteers to be part of a “walking school bus” or to walk individual children to school?—and how you can contribute.
How we choose to show up in this moment is up to each of us, but this moment calls us all to show up. Ultimately, it is relationships that keep us safe, not systems.
