I just watched this moving TEDx talk by Stanford Sociologist Prudence Carter. She distinguishes between diversity (a picture of demographics) and integration (where everyone feels that they truly belong). I found this useful in part because it helps tease out and think about why schools that have diverse populations aren’t actually integrated.

Much research has shown that to be truly integrated, we must integrate in the classroom – not just at the level of a district or school. Dr. Carter adds that“we can all shift the tides of social and education inequality if we provide ample resources and opportunities, if we cultivate culturally flexible minds, and if… we come with empathic hearts.”

Diversity is only the first step…
